Affirmations: The power of words to shape your reality
The words we use have a powerful impact on the way we see ourselves and live our lives. Our words have the power to energise and uplift us, motivate and inspire us. Affirmations are a way for us to change our mental patterns, and subsequently change our behaviours, actions and reactions. Affirmations help us to get clear on our goals and dreams. They motivate us to put into action the steps necessary to create the life we want to live.
Put simply, an affirmation is a sentence or phrase that uses positive and active words. When repeated daily, or even more regularly, our subconscious absorbs the words we speak. And eventually, our thought patterns and actions change so that our affirmations become our reality.
Affirmations won't change your life over night. Like learning to ride a bike, or swim, or other physical skill, it requires practice and training the muscles. In this case, it's training the brain to change the way we think and speak about ourselves, our work or our life. When you constantly put yourself down, apologise for yourself when speaking, or find fault in what you are doing, then this energy will be what shows up in your life. Shifting your mindset can be difficult, especially after a life time of negative self-talk. So start small. And be kind to yourself. If you stumble, that's ok, pick up where you left off and start again.
Starting out with Affirmations
Speaking positive phrases out loud can spark fear and terror. And speaking positive phrases about ourselves and the life we want to live can be down right unimaginable for some people. Shifting your mindset is a process. Start small.
Begin by writing down your affirmation of choice. Find a nice notebook or journal. On a fresh page write out a positive sentence or phrase, something you want for your life, something you want to feel about yourself. For example, "I am blessed" or "I am loved." These are very broad examples of affirmations. But, they are a good way to start. You may even like to write down a few ways that your life is currently blessed or ways that you are loved. They can be as general or specific as you like, e.g. "I am blessed to sit in the sunshine today" or "I am blessed to have a friend come to my house and bring me food when I was unwell."
Start to play around with the words, expanding to be more specific as you feel more comfortable with creating your own affirmations. Then, when you feel ready, move on to saying your affirmations out loud. And as the key to affirmations working is repetition, the more you can say them the better!
