I’ll never forget the first time I read Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman. I was working in child care at the time and at the beginning of my transformation from unconscious to conscious awareness of my life. A co-worker and I would have these amazing conversations about life each week while setting up play equipment in the yard when we opened the centre together. She mentioned this book and a few days later brought it to work and lent it me.
I read it… and then proceeded to share it with my Dad, a close friend, who shared it with a friend of hers, and so on until it made it’s way back to my co-worker a few months later – the inside cover filled with names and messages from those whose lives it had touched.
I went on to buy my own copy. Which I later took traveling with me in 2010. I passed it on to my friend, and guardian angel, Jeremy, who then passed it on to another traveller, and so on it went again.
Back in Australia a few years later, I found the book again and this copy has stuck with me. It’s words continuing to transform my life or the lessons shared only now making sense as things happen in my own life mirroring said lessons.
The Awakening Begins…
Ekhart Tolle is one of the leading authors and speakers on spirituality and transformation. The Power of Now is another (in a long line of books) I’ve owned more than once! My books tend to have a bit of a life of their own, coming into my life when I need them and moving on when they feel the time has come to help someone else on their journey to consciousness.
As the title suggestions, The Power of Now is about just that, it is about connecting with the NOW. Tolle guides the reader on a journey to dissolve unconscious (limiting) beliefs and and become present in our consciousness, in the now. With a focus on how we attach to pain and suffering. And how being present allows us to surrender these attachments.
Being in the Now
In recent years, the practice of mindfulness has gained popularity as more and more people search for ways to reconnect with themselves and stop being so busy. The Little Book of Mindfulness by Dr Patrizia Collard offers mindfulness practices that can take place in just 10-minutes a day.
I keep this book beside my bed and flip through either in the morning or before going to bed each night. I randomly pick a practice to do to clear out my mind and connect with myself. Mindfulness is now used as therapy for health and well-being. When we know how to connect with ourselves and be present, we relieve our mind and body of stress, anxiety, depression, and other health issues.
Mindfulness plays a major role in maintaining our connection with our consciousness. Mindfulness practices help us tap into the energy of the Universe. It helps us be in flow with the abundant energy available to us.
Learning to Trust the Universe…
Understanding that there is something bigger than ourselves at play is a terrifying thought! Our Ego likes to remain in control. It likes to know exactly how things are going to happen and what the outcomes will be. The mind wants to keep us safe and protected.
A few months ago, I came across Gabrielle Bernstein’s The Universe has Your Back. As I read, it felt as though the words were written just for me. Each message leapt off the page. I was still allowing fear to lead my life. But, my fear of failure was shattered with each Universal Lesson Bernstein had to share.
My friend Jeremy had been my first teacher to take me deeply into the lessons of the Universe. The Universe has Your Back expanded on his teachings. Suddenly, lessons and messages I’d learned many years ago were reawakened. I was reminded and shown anew how I was allowing fear to lead me still. But, I was also shown and guided how to come from a place of love instead. Bernstein shows the reader how to connect with the messages of the Universe to create greatness in your life.
Listening to the signs the Universe throws at you
Last month as I walked laps around Sydney International Airport I wandered into a book store. I wasn’t going to buy anything. I already had enough books/audiobooks for at least the next 6 months. But something about the blue book with the simple title leapt out at me from the bookshelf. I didn’t know why, but I needed this book in my life.
Three days later, I understood why (you can read more about that here). Real Calm by Psychologies Magazine is packed with research and expert advice (in a really easy to read format) to help you achieve a calm state of being. The knowledge in this book is interspersed with quizzes and self-reflective questions to get you breaking down your old mindset and help guide yourself out of feeling stressed and into a feeling of calm.
I read this book in just a few short days and my highlighter and pen never left my side. I took notes and marked out sections to come back to. Keen for new strategies to deal with stress and find some calmness amongst the trauma. This book still travels with me. I reflect on pieces of it when I feel the need to reconnect with the messages and lessons I’m still coming to terms with.
Books that have awakened your soul…
What other books would you recommend that have awakened your soul and raised your consciousness awareness? I’d love to hear what is, or has been, on your reading list!
